How to Volunteer


New York Downtown Hospital, a member of the New York-Presbyterian Healthcare System, is a non-profit institution located in Lower Manhattan. Downtown Hospital is a community teaching hospital primarily serving the people who work and live in Lower Manhattan.

With more than fifty departments, the hospital provides many volunteer opportunities and unpaid internships for those who are interested in making a difference in the lives of others. In return, volunteers and interns can gain an invaluable experience. Volunteer opportunities and unpaid internships are provided in a number of areas.

Volunteer and Internship Opportunities

Administrative & Clerical
Volunteers will provide administrative support and gain skills in office management, such as file management, data entry, reception for both walk-ins and phone inquiries, appointment scheduling, and other general office duties. There are many departments that need volunteers for these positions.
•Minimum age: 14
•Hours of Volunteer Service: Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
•Level of Commitment: Minimum of 4 consecutive hours a week for 6 months (100 hours)

Direct Patient Care
In patient care, volunteers will be placed in the nursing units, emergency room, or other areas where doctors and nurses provide patient care. Typical duties include transporting patients, comforting patients and family, answering page lights, changing beds, and delivering meals to patients. Meanwhile, volunteers will have opportunities to observe medical staff's responsibilities and activities in the medical field. All volunteers must be self-motivated and have a pleasant personality.
•Minimum age: 17
•Hours of Volunteer Service: Monday through Sunday, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
•Level of Commitment: Minimum of 4 consecutive hours a week for 6 months (100 hours)

Security & Public Information
Volunteers in these positions will provide hospitality to patients, their families and visitors. Volunteers will ensure a secure environment. Duties involve greeting visitors, giving directions, providing patient information, and ID verifications.
•Placement determined by education and qualification.
•Hours of Volunteer Service: Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
•Level of Commitment: Minimum of 4 consecutive hours a week for 6 months (100 hours)

Community Outreach
One of New York Downtown Hospital's missions is to reach out to the community and provide healthcare not only for those who come to the hospital, but also for those who work or live in this community. We offer many health outreach events and health fairs for the Lower Manhattan community throughout the year. These outreach events are not scheduled regularly and dates may vary. Volunteers assist with registration, measuring height and weight, directing traffic, and with the operation of medical equipment. Trained, bilingual volunteers will also have the opportunity to act as translators for doctors and patients.
•Minimum age: 14
•Hours of Volunteer Service: Varies throughout the year.

Laboratory
Volunteers are active in several laboratory settings including the Blood Bank, Chemistry, Histology, Pathology, and Hematology. Volunteers assist in data entry, report relay (by phone), specimen labeling and logging and slide preparations. Volunteers will have the opportunity to observe laboratory operations and learn how technicians work.
•Minimum age: 14
•Hours of Volunteer Service: Monday through Friday, laboratories are most active in the morning
•Level of Commitment: Minimum of 4 consecutive hours a week for 6 months (100 hours)

Medical Assistant
New York Downtown Hospital offer opportunities for those who are pursuing a career as a medical assistant. Duties include general office work and data entry. Volunteers can gain the experience and knowledge required to become a medical assistant.
•Priority given to students majoring in “Medical Assistant”
•Hours of Volunteer Service: Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m.
•Level of Commitment: Minimum of 4 consecutive hours a week for 6 months (100 hours)


The Application Process
New York Downtown Hospital offers volunteer and unpaid internship opportunities year-round. If you are interested, fill out an application. The application includes a medical form and a reference form. Once the application is completed, call our office at (917) 286-2571 for an interview. After the interview, we will schedule you for an orientation. If you have any questions on the volunteer process, you may contact us by phone or email. Volunteer Services is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
